:: Desiderata :: desired things for 2009

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly, and listen to others, even to the dull and ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity
and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Fight Colds and Flu Naturally

Many of you will be suffering one of these horrid ailments as the chill, dank months of winter encroach upon us. Germs are always around but a strong immune system will take them in its stride. The white blood cells have the ability to detect and destroy bacteria and viruses before they start anything, so it is in everyone's best interests to see that they have everything they need to function well.
  • Rest – get plenty of sleep
  • Fluids – water, herb teas, hot juices with cinnamon and ginger
  • Laughter – your immune system works best when you are happy!
  • Natural vitamin C – salads and fresh fruit might seem unappealing when it is cold but do not abandon fruit and vegetables. Make vegetable soups, stew fruit with warming spices..
  • Echinacea – helps the white blood cells in their task of spotting bugs and of engulfing and destroying them once spotted. A daily maintenance dose can help keep bugs at bay.
A merry and healthy Xmas from all of us at Remedies to you and yours wherever you are.

:: Black Cohosh in the News ::

An alarmist article appeared in various newspapers last week, claiming that Black Cohosh could help spread cancerous cells from the breast to the lung. The research was carried out on mice. Mice that already had breast cancer showed a greater tendency to develop lung tumours when taking Black Cohosh.

However, mice that had no breast cancer were unaffected by their daily dose of Black Cohosh. They showed no more tendency to develop either breast cancer or any other cancer than the mice that were not given Black Cohosh. The authors stated: “The lack of effect on mammary tumour development suggests that Black Cohosh would not influence breast cancer risk if given to women before tumour formation.”

We would make the following common sense, non-alarmist observations.

We do not recommend any herbal remedies to women with cancer.
Women with breast cancer or any other cancer should only be taking herbal products under the supervision of their consultant or a qualified medical herbalist working with their consultant.
Black Cohosh should only be given to women with symptoms of low oestrogen levels.
Black Cohosh products vary in quality - reputable companies manufacture to the highest standards, have GMP status, and can provide safety data.

FAQ :: Wash out your mouth....

For many years the safety of ethanol-containing herbal medicinal products for children has been questioned by experts and consumers. The Working Group of the Cooperation Phytopharmaka in Germany (where liquid herbal medicinal products for children have been available without prescription since 1926) carried out a scientific examination of the toxicological relevance of ethanol in herbal medicinal products with regard to ingested amounts, metabolism and elimination in children.

They compared the amount of alcohol ingested in the recommended dose of liquid extractions of popular herbs such as ivy, thyme and valerian to the amounts of alcohol produced by the metabolism of common carbohydrates such as bananas, fruit juice and bread. The amounts found in the bloodstream after ingestion of these foods are consistently higher than the amounts found after ingestion of the recommended dose of ethanolic tincture.

Examining reports from poison control centres, the Working Group found no published reports of intoxication with herbal medicinal products. The most common intoxicant for young children was mouthwash.

The Working Group concluded that when used at the recommended dose, the health risk of ethanol-containing herbal medicinal products is negligible.

Blue Green Algae Update

On Tuesday 14th October, the Health Supplement section of the Irish Times ran a story concerning Blue Green Algae sourced from the Upper Klamath Lake in the US which could have harmful effects due to the presence of a liver toxin, Microcystin.

We immediately contacted our supplier for their response to the statements made in the article which is summarised below. We are confident that the response will help eliminate any doubt one might have by reading such an article and are also confident in the products that we provide.

Blue Green Planet:
"Eight years ago there was an excessively long summer period around the Upper Klamath lake where the algae is harvested. This lead to an increase in Microcystin levels due to the rise in temperature and lack of winds to distribute both algae and the microcystin. Microcystin has a parasitic relationship with Blue green algae as it is high in nutritional properties. Micocystin is also present in all fresh water and not just those containing blue green algae. It is not present in spirulina as that comes from salt water sources. Regulations were brought in the control the levels and a tolerance set for products made from the Algae. This level was set above the tolerance for Microcystin to Fresh water ratio (I millionth of a gram: Gram)

Blue Green Planet use the tolerance level of Microcystin to Water rather than Microcystin to Algae. Consumption of the product is as safe as consuming water from any fresh water source."

REGULATION OF VITAMINS - A CLEAR CASE OF OVER-REGULATION

An independent film producer has released a video about EU regulation of vitamins (Food Supplements Directive), which can be > viewed here.

SOS video

In the words of the video,"Is it fair or logical that we have the choice to destroy our own health and be a burden on the health service by smoking, binge drinking and eating fatty foods, but we don't have the choice to stay healthy by supplementing our diet with vitamins?"

:: Free Rice ::

An internet word game has generated enough rice to feed 50,000 people for one day, the UN's World Food Programme (WFP) has said. The game, FreeRice, tests the vocabulary of participants. For each click on a correct answer, the website donates money to buy 10 grains of rice. Companies advertising on the website provide the money to the WFP to buy and distribute the rice. FreeRice went online in early October and has now raised 1bn grains of rice.

You can’t be serious Dr.Ernst -???-

Dr.Ernst is back in the media spotlight with a poor quality study claiming that herbal medicines can’t be proven to do any good, but may do significant harm.

As the National Institute of Medical Herbalists pointed out, basing such damning conclusions on 3 trials, one of which was a pilot study involving very low numbers, hardly typifies the rigorous scientific standards that Ernst purports to support. One is tempted to question whether Ernst is more interested in media attention for himself than the health of the country’s population?

Claiming that there are no trials proving the benefits of herbal remedies is a very strange thing to do, unless one is ignorant of the Medicine Licences granted to herbs, e.g. echinacea and the Traditional Herbal Medicine Licences granted to several herbal products.
Surely this can’t be your “Ernst”, Dr.Ernst -???-
